Adrian Tomine, Couverture de The New Yorker, Last straw, 18 novembre 2013

“I remember eating lunch at the taco kiosk near City Hall, and I had this vision of Bloomberg leaving the building for the last time and getting on the subway,” says Adrian Tomine about this week’s cover, “The Last Straw.” “I know that won’t actually happen ’til January,” he continues, “but it just seemed like such a turning point, a poignant moment for a guy who basically changed the rules so that he could stay in office longer.”
“I never drew an autumnal image like this when I lived in California—there, the change from one season to the next seemed to occur in tiny, almost imperceptible increments. I’ve lived in New York for ten years now, and I can still be awestruck by a sunny fall day when it seems like the leaves turned overnight. My four-year-old daughter and I will be pointing excitedly at the different colored leaves in the park, while my wife (a lifelong New Yorker) will just be like, ‘Yep, those are nice.’ I also associate this season with Charles Schulz’s “Peanuts,” partially because of all the gags about falling leaves, jumping in piles of leaves, Halloween, etc., but also because Schulz drew really good trees and foliage, especially in the early years of the strip.”
